Westfield Sydney Leverages the Wilson Connectivity Architecture
THE CHALLENGE
Westfield Sydney, an exclusive shopping destination in downtown Sydney, reopened in 2010 after extensive redevelopment. Home to many premier retailers, the center’s owners, the Westfield Group, recognized the critical need for ubiquitous wireless service to enhance the shopping experience and improve operations.
THE SOLUTION: Active DAS and Private Mobile Radio
The Westfield Group partnered with Wilson Connectivity to implement a state-of-the-art 5G cellular network using the Zinwave Active Distributed Antenna System (DAS) platform. This wideband in-building wireless system accommodated multiple services from three commercial carriers and Westfield’s own Private Mobile Radio (PMR) system on a single hardware layer.
THE RESULT: An Enhanced Customer Experience
Shoppers now enjoy uninterrupted high-speed cellular service throughout the 88,000 square-meter retail space, enhancing their ability to compare prices, read reviews, and share their experiences on social media in real-time.
The robust 5G network supports augmented realities (AR) applications, allowing customers to virtually try on clothes or visualize furniture in their homes before purchasing. And retailers can now send targeted, location-based promotions to customers’ smartphones as they move through the center.
THE BENEFITS: Smart Monitoring and Data Driven Decisions
The integrated PMR system on the 5G network has significantly improved staff coordination and response times to customer inquiries and security issues. Real-time inventory tracking and automated restocking systems are now possible, reducing out-of-stock incidents and improving overall inventory efficiency. High-definition security cameras with AI-powered facial recognition are now operational, enhancing safety and loss prevention efforts.
The 5G network enables precise tracking of customer movements, allowing Westfield to optimize store layouts and improve the overall shopping flow. Retailers can also access instant data on sales performance, customer engagement, and other key metrics, enabling quick adjustments to marketing strategies.
The Zinwave Active DAS platform’s ability to add future services without expensive upgrades ensures that Westfield Sydney remains at the forefront of retail technology. This scalability allows for easy integration of emerging technologies such as IoT devices, smart mirrors, and advanced payment systems.
CONCLUSION
By investing in a comprehensive 5G network, Westfield Sydney has not only enhanced the immediate shopping experience but has also positioned itself as a leader in the future of retail. The improved connectivity has resulted in increased customer satisfaction, operational efficiency, and data-driven decision-making capabilities, setting a new standard for shopping centers worldwide.
